What is a USP Slide, and why you should have one

Today more so than ever, hiring managers usually face a surplus of candidates for any position available. As they trawl through the many resumes and CVs, how can you stand out from the crowd?

An easy way to make yourself more memorable is through a 1-page Unique Selling Proposition (USP) Slide. As the name indicates, this is a 1-page slide (either in Powerpoint or PDF) that encapsulates all your USPs, testimonials, contact details, and other relevant information. It works to complement your resume, giving the hiring manager a quick look into you and your work.

A sample 1-page USP Slide looks like this:

At minimum, the 1-page USP should include:

  • Name
  • Position
  • Personal summary statement. A statement that summarises your personal brand. It should mention your strengths, your career aspirations and your key USP.
  • Core competencies. Your qualifications, as well as key roles and work tasks you previously completed. Remember to include phrases and keywords used in the job posting!
  • Key Achievements. Awards, accolades and significant milestones you achieved in your work.
  • What do you bring to the table as an individual? Put your soft skills and personal achievements here.

When you next send in your resume, bundle it with a 1-page USP for greater impact and wait for those callbacks!
